We were drawn to this specific cause because of the unique link between the at-risk dogs, and the at-risk youth.

At Pawsitive Works, hard to adopt shelter dogs are partnered with at-risk youth for a five-week behavior modification program. Together, the pair maneuvers through and gains understanding of the issues facing them in life while developing better ways to cope and address challenges. The program emphasizes teaching youth empathy, self-confidence, patience, communication and mindfulness, which are all needed assets to help the youth stay out of trouble as well as becoming more productive members of society. The program is also committed to teaching dogs positive behaviors, common commands such as sit, down and stay.

Since 2009, the results from our program have been extremely successful, said Pawsitive Works Executive Director Karen Schumacher. In addition to supporting the adoption of these dogs, weve found that more than 98% of youth stay out of trouble during our program as well. Were truly shaping both ends of the leash!

Any family who wishes to adopt a dog through this program is asked that no matter what stage the dog is in during the program, that he be able to finish with his at-risk youth partner.

Its such an accomplishment for this kids to turn over a dog they worked closely with, and helped find a home, Schumacher said. Greensations Launches First Hot Pepper Stop Itch Spray For Dogs and Cats

Greensations has launched the worlds first hot pepper anti-itch spray for dogs and cats under their new ThermaPet brand. Hot pepper anti-itch spray is nothing new for Greensations, a company that built several successful OTC brands for humans. ThermaPet Stop Itch Spray is designed specifically for pets with long and short fur. Over the years, hundreds of customers have said our pepper itch sprays worked for their pets. So we decided to take it a step further and create an anti-itch spray specifically for dogs and cats. ThermaPet stops itching in less than 2 minutes for most pets and it promotes healing, says Wayne Perry, CEO of GSC Products, LLC.

In a one month open label study using 40 volunteers including 26 dogs and 14 cats, ThermaPet stopped itching and scratching by 95 percent based on customer surveys provided by the pet owners. No adverse reactions were recorded and 80% got noticeable relief after the first application, according to pet owners.

We offered free product to the first forty customers with either a cat or dog who previously commented on using our anti-itch products on their pets. Within 48 hours, we had all forty participants in place. Every pet owner filled out a survey after each week of use and the results were amazing. In the first week, eight out of ten pets completely stopped itching. Over the next three weeks, 38 of the forty pets were essentially cured according to their owners, adds Perry.

Along with Capsaicin, the active component of hot peppers, ThermaPet uses horseradish to reduce inflammation and Black Walnut to fight fungal infections. In addition, this proprietary formulation contains other botanicals to boost immunity and reduce allergic reactions including: Goldenseal, Nettle, Jewel Weed, Vitamin C and Sea Salt.

Well, the month of September is upon us and with that comes a month of education, education, and some more education. At my company, Gotcha Bed Bug Inspectors, we always say, "education is the key to staying bedbug free!" So, we thought we would explore some of the myths and misconceptions about those little blood sucking friends we're celebrating during the 30 days of September.

In our travels visiting clients from hotel owners, business travelers and school administration, all the way to home owners, we have come across some very interesting methods our clients have found on the World Wide Web to prevent and get rid of bedbugs. These are actual stories and not made up. Stay with us, you just might learn something...

Myth: I put my shoes in the freezer so that should kill all the bedbugs. Right?

Actually, this is not true at all; we wish it was that easy. Bedbugs are a special kind of pest. You must know how to treat them in order to eradicate them. Your common home freezer does not reach the required temperature to act as a killing agent for bedbugs.

Myth: I threw my bed out so I have nothing to worry about. Right?

Wrong! Bedbugs do love beds, but they don't only infest beds. Bedbugs are not picky pests. Where we are, they want to be. In fact, if you move a bed throughout your home, you may infest other areas of the home where bedbugs might not be living. This is also true for apartment buildings. Bedbugs attach on to things -- you don't want to drop a bedbug in your haste to remove a bed. It could find a new home just by latching on to someone who walks through your building's hallway.

Myth: I am very clean so I have nothing to worry about. Right?

Absolutely wrong! Bedbugs will infest anywhere from a five-star hotel to the messiest of apartments. The truth is, it is much harder to eradicate bedbugs from a home or dwelling where there is clutter, however, it doesn't mean bedbugs won't infest your clean home, too. That is why it's so important to ask your pest control company about the necessary steps to properly prepare your home for treatment.

Myth: I hung all of my stuff outside. How long do I leave my clothing out in the sun for the bedbugs to be killed?

Unfortunately, the sun won't do much but give your bedbugs a tan. In all honesty, the best method is to wash all of your clothing as per the label. Using a washer with detergent and dryer on a high heat setting is a tried and true method to eradicate bedbugs and eggs from clothing.

Myth: I don't have any bites, so I can't have bedbugs. Right?

Wrong. It is not uncommon for two people to be sleeping in the same bed and both be bitten, but everyone reacts differently to bed bug bites. Not everyone is going to show a bite in the area they have been bitten. Tricky, yes, but definitely not true.

Myth: I don't have to wash all of my clothing if my home has bedbugs. Right?

This is a great question and one I'm frequently asked. To play it safe, most companies suggest that you wash everything you can. It's always better to be safe than sorry. The best course of action, though, is to save time and money and have a bedbug dog inspect your home and determine exactly where the bedbugs are hiding. This way you'll be able to pinpoint their exact location and take the necessary steps to remove them.

Myth: The country I just came from doesn't have bedbugs. Right?

The truth is wherever we go, they go. There are some countries that have a higher bedbug population than others, but with frequent imports and exports of goods and as travel continues to increase, bedbugs have a good chance of being in just about every country. If you are traveling, make sure you use a bedbug spray to create a barrier around your luggage and make sure you don't bring anything home with you, regardless of where you go.

Myth: Bedbugs have babies daily. How will you ever stop them?

Each adult female produces about one egg per day; a common housefly lays 500 eggs over three to four days. Bedbug eggs take 10 days to hatch and another five to six weeks for the offspring to develop into an adult.

Myth: Bedbugs transmit diseases. Right?

Bedbugs definitely contribute to anxiety and stress, but there have been no reported cases of bedbugs transmitting disease to humans.

Myth: I think I have a bedbug in my hair.

Bedbugs don't like heat, so they are unlikely to be living in your hair or on your skin. They are more likely to travel in luggage, backpacks, and pocketbooks.

These are just the top 10 myths we have come across in our field, there are many more questions as a result of misinformation from websites. Make sure you check the validity of a site before following its suggestions. The best piece of advice I can offer is to find a pest control professional that you feel comfortable with and they should be able to answer any and all questions you might have. Like we always say, questions are free and it never hurts to ask!

The Association for Airline Passenger Rights ("AAPR") today released its online publication, "Passenger Guide to Pet Safe Travel." The guide, which is published as part of a strategic partnership with TripsWithPets (TWP) announced last month by AAPR, provides airline passengers with information, helpful tips and resources designed to make pet safe flying more achievable. The guide is being made available for free for all airline passengers.

The guide includes information about pet-related incidents, pet health and immunization requirements, general airline information, cabin and cargo requirements, security procedures, service animals for passengers with disabilities, and other resources.

"There is a lot to take into consideration when flying with pets, including varying airline policies, getting through security check-points, pet friendly areas at airports and legal requirements, just to name a few," said Brandon M. Macsata, Executive Director of the Association for Airline Passenger Rights. "We hope that airline passengers find our new travel guide useful when planning trips with their furry friend! It is a must-have resource considering all of the little things that go into pet safe travel."

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), airlines reported five incidents involving the loss, death, or injury of pets while traveling by air in December 2012, which is last reported data. The incidents involved one pet death and four pet injuries. For all of last year, carriers reported 30 pet deaths, 27 pet injuries, and one lost pet. In 2011, carriers reported 35 pet deaths, nine pet injuries, and two lost pets. [1]

Celibacy is a spiritual requisite for Priests of the Catholic religion. The law of celibacy is not considered to be a doctrine, but rather a discipline to abstain from all sexual intercourse and marriage. It is believed to be purifying and to strengthen their connection with faith.

The celibacy laws of the church were very clear, stating that any priest who strayed from the strict rules would be banned from priesthood, which is why he never told her his true identity. He simply was known as "Uncle."

The Kindle Paperwhite is the latest e-reader released by Amazon in the popular Kindle line. The Paperwhite is unique from previous iterations of the Kindle as it is equipped with an adjustable front-lit screen. Amazon spent over 3 years developing the technology for the Paperwhite screen to provide an even distribution of light over the entire reading surface. The Kindle Paperwhite includes 2GB of storage, which is space enough to hold up to 1,100 average length books. Amazon has taken the lead in the e-reader world by creating a library of millions of books available for the Kindle, including 180,000 books that are Kindle exclusive titles.

Kindle-readers have enjoyed the ease of portability provided by the Kindle, but as with most electronics, have shied away from confidently taking the Kindle along to places where it could experience possible moisture damage. Readers would have to forgo their Kindle in places such as the beach, the pool, the kitchen, the bathing room, and would even have to leave the Kindle at home on rainy days and carefully limit use by spill-prone children. Waterfi's waterproofing saves the Kindle Paperwhite in all of these situations and makes it possible to clean with soap and water, should it be used during a messy lunch or by children of any age.

Waterfi has treated the Kindle Paperwhite with what is described as a patent pending waterproofing technique developed over the last 4 years by Waterfi President Royce Nicholas. He describes the process as "A Dual Layer of protection and insulation from water, sweat, sand, corrosion, and other environmental threats." The first layer is a unique rubbery compound on the inside of the device, filling every crack and crevice to surround the electrical innards in a watertight cushion. The second layer is then applied for added corrosion-proofing and to strengthen the electrical insulation up to 40,000 volts.

Foresters, the international financial services organisation, are proud to announce that they have partnered up with Operation Shoebox UK - an innovative mission which supports serving soldiers by sending them shoeboxes of necessities and goodies.

The idea of Operation Shoebox UK is simple - yet makes such a huge difference to the troops in Afghanistan - providing them with a shoebox full of much needed basics (such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and foot powder) to goodies (such as magazines, pens, and hot chocolate).

Most importantly, it reminds them that they are not forgotten.

Alexis Bovington, Membership Development Manager at Foresters, says: "As part of the partnership, we are asking our volunteer members to host their own events to create these boxes.

"Our volunteers will be asked to pack the boxes, and decorate them, and also write a personal message to include to the soldiers. If they want, volunteers can include their address for the soldiers to write back to them".

Two events are already planned for June in Birmingham and Huddersfield, with more in the pipeline, supported by volunteers both from Foresters and Operation Shoebox UK.

Hands for Hope offers the youth of North Hollywood and its surrounding regions with many valuable programs for their intellectual, artistic, physical and professional development, and we are proud to sponsor this fantastic event, says Childrens Obesity Fund co-founder Dr. Michael Omidi. Local events like the walk and the annual activities fair go a long way to inform young people of the healthy resources right there in their own communities, and we anticipate a fun and successful day for everyone.

The 5K HopeWalk began in 2001 as a way to encourage young people to embrace healthy lifestyles. The walk has been sponsored by local businesses and organizations, as well as major corporations including Wells Fargo, Disney, Whole Foods, Dole and Adidas. The Activities Fair was added in 2006 to give children and their parents the opportunity to participate in sports and fitness activities, receive nutritional and health guidance and enjoy healthy food tastings.

The day begins with registration at 8 am, and proceeds with a brisk walk from Magnolia and Tujunga Avenues to North Hollywood Park. Participants can then enjoy the events offered as part of the Activities Fair and Taste of Healthy NoHo, where local food venders give samples of their healthy culinary wares. Hands for Hope (hands4hope.org) offers programs for young people and single parents designed to help them become successful, happy and healthy members of society. Co-parenting presents unique challenges for parents

One of the biggest challenges during divorce is determining child custody. In Georgia, judges typically encourage a custody plan that is in the best interests of the children and grants both parents visitation time.

Judges also grant either sole custody or joint custody. If sole custody is granted, the non-custodial parent retains visitation rights but is not allowed to make significant legal decisions concerning items such as health care, religious upbringing or education. With joint custody, both parents share in the decision-making process regarding these critical decisions.

Be consistent when making decisions, but also stay flexible

Regardless of what type of custody is granted, it is best for both parents to remain actively involved in their children's lives. This is referred to as "co-parenting" and has numerous positive benefits for children.

Although co-parenting styles differ based on family needs, divorce and parenting coaches provide some basic guidelines that can help ensure a smooth transition to co-parenting and help minimize the negative effect of divorce on children.

It is important to allow children the ability to spend as much time with each parent as they desire. Georgia law allows children over the age of 14 to choose which parent they want to live with, and children are likely to respond positively to parents who respect their living preference.

Additionally, remember that parenting was a team effort in the past, and this should not change because of a divorce. Try to respond to problems that arise in the same fashion as before the divorce. Children adjust better if parents continue to respond to situations in a consistent manner.

However, it is also important to stay flexible with decisions and realize that because divorce involves adjusting to a new situation, compromise may sometimes be necessary. Remaining open to creative solutions and expressing a willingness to "give in" to the other parent when necessary sets a great example for children, who often model their parents' behavior as adults.

Both parents should remain included in significant events

Divorce can be emotionally traumatizing for even the most mature and stable adults, so it is also extremely important for co-parents to keep arguing to a minimum around children.

It is expected that this may initially be difficult. Nonetheless, children will gain long-term benefits from witnessing their parents handle negative emotions in a mature and responsible manner.

Custody and Traveling with Your Child

Many of our Pittsburgh child custody clients have questions when a custody determination is being made as to how this agreement will affect their ability to travel with their child(ren). Often times, the parties' abilities to travel and how frequently they may travel is addressed in a Consent Order for Custody which is filed with the court. However, there are still cases addressing this specific issue where a custody order leaves questions as to what type of travel is permitted with your child(ren).

The Pennsylvania Superior Court recently addressed the issue of parents' travel in a custody case in October 2012. Mother wanted to travel to Ecuador with her daughter to visit extended family and stay there for three weeks. The Superior Court analyzed the issue of whether it was an error of law for the trial court to deny the Mother the right to travel to Ecuador when she had previously been granted sole legal custody of the Child.

This case, M.P. v. M.P., 2012 PA Super 215 (2012), addressed the issue of a Mother's travel to Ecuador with her Child in light of the fact that the Mother was previously given sole legal custody of the Child. The Mother in this case wanted to travel to Ecuador with the parties' minor child to visit the child's grandparents on their farm, and the child's aunt. Father opposed this travel, claiming concern for "different diseases" in Ecuador and the Child's health and well-being, specifically if the Child became sick and her current health insurance was not accepted. The trial court held that Mother was prohibited from traveling to Ecuador with the Child, after which Mother filed an appeal to the Superior Court.

The Superior Court looked more in depth at what exactly "legal custody" meant and how it applied to this situation, as Mother here had sole legal custody of Child when the trial court decided she could not travel to Ecuador. The Court stated that "[w]hen one parent has sole legal custody, that parent has final authority to make decisions, regardless of whether the other parent agrees or disagrees." The Superior Court ultimately determined that the trial court had abused its discretion in prohibiting Mother to travel with the child, given the fact that she had sole legal custody. The trial court had allowed Father to counter Mother's decision to travel with their child, which the Superior Court decided "in essence gave him the control, i.e., the power that he would have if he had shared legal custody."

Furthermore, the Superior Court found it significant that the trial court's decision was made in light of the fact that Father had not exercised his supervised visitation time for eighteen months, and during this time, had no input into any decisions made by Mother on the child's behalf and did not see the Child for this time period. The Superior Court stated that these facts, coupled with the parties' previous agreement on Mother's sole legal custody, emphasized the fact that Father "believe[d] Mother ha[d] made proper decisions regarding the child's best interests" in the past.

Additionally, the trial court justified its prohibition of Mother's travel by stating that although Ecuador is a signatory to the Hague Convention, Ecuador did not comply with the Hague Convention in recent years, which it concluded "was not in the best interest of the Child to visit a country which may result in her being separated from her natural father for a long period of time." However, this was not developed from testimony in the case, but rather the trial court gained this information through its own internet search taking place after the initial hearing. Mother was not advised of this information before filing her appeal to the Superior Court. Therefore, the appellate court did not find this information significant and did not rely upon this when reversing the lower court's decision.

The Superior Court ultimately granted Mother permission to travel to Ecuador with Child without Father's consent. The Superior Court agreed with Mother's argument that the trial court's decision "contravened" the parties' agreement - and thus, if Father was able to prohibit Mother from traveling with the parties' child, this would have essentially awarded Father with shared legal custody.

The takeaway from this case regarding traveling with your child is to include specific language in your custody agreement. Make sure you address travel in your agreement so that this type of litigation does not become necessary in your case.

The unfortunate state of the economy has led to national concern about spending. With the continuously increasing costs of almost everything, parents are quickly realizing the high expenses associated with raising children. Consequently, parents who are receiving child support payments are now, more than ever, depending on such income.

Who pays and how much?

In Texas, noncustodial parents are generally mandated to pay child support. Of course, the amount each parent is required to pay varies depending on his or her own financial situation. Generally, child support payments are calculated by multiplying the noncustodial parent's net income by a legally mandated percentage.

The mandated percentage by which the payments are calculated is dependent upon the number of children who the payments are intended to support. Currently, if there is only one child involved, the noncustodial parent's income will be multiplied by 20 percent; however, if four children are involved, the noncustodial parent's income will be multiplied by 35 percent. The idea is that these percentages accurately reflect the need for increased funding as a result of a larger family unit.

Additionally, when issuing a decision regarding child support payments, a judge's determination is typically guided by a strict set of guidelines. Adherence to these judicial guidelines, however, is not definite. Consequently, the presence of an experienced attorney can help ensure that a judge focuses on all relevant factors, even if such are not mentioned in the judicial guidelines.

What if payments aren't being made?

The court recognizes a parent's reliance on child support payments and therefore offers many options to ensure that a custodial parent is receiving the payments to which he or she is entitled.

The process of wage garnishment is the most common method used to ensure child support payments are being made. If the court agrees that the noncustodial parent is not fulfilling the obligation of financially providing for the children, the court can contact the parent's employer and have the child support payments directly taken from the parent's paycheck. This court-assisted intervention will leave no choice for the noncustodial parent but to make the mandated payments.

In the event that wage garnishment is not an appropriate method of securing payments, the court can take further steps. For example, the court may suspend the parent's driver's license or even revoke his or her passport until the parent is up-to-date with the mandated financial support.

Although revoking a license or passport may not generate immediate financial assistance to the custodial parent, it is certainly helpful in ensuring that the noncustodial parent understands the ramifications of not making the court-mandated payments.
