According to law enforcement sources, shoplifting activity has daily, weekly and seasonal patterns. Shoplifters are more often caught later in the week and during high-demand periods such as pre-Easter, pre-summer and pre-Christmas. Because the majority of shoplifters are juveniles and young people, their activity reflects the times when they are free to visit the mall and shops--after school, during weekends and vacation periods.
Because we are entering the school summer vacation period, it's a good time to review what is known about shoplifting in general and juvenile shoplifting in particular. However, not all shoplifters are alike. There are the opportunistic shoplifters who take items for their own use. There are those who steal for resale, often to support drug habits. Finally, there are organized groups who systematically steal large amounts of merchandise for resale.
What is taken by shoplifters? Many national surveys have shown that the most common types of goods stolen in the U.S. include cigarettes, over-the-counter drugs and condoms and other birth control products. Music, videos and designer clothing are also attractive to shoplifters.
Why Do Kids Shoplift?
Teenagers usually fall into the "opportunistic" category. In some infrequent cases, the teen actually needs the item and cannot afford to purchase it. Some kids crave the attention or are seeking to lash out against their parents and authority. Others do it to fit in with their friends. Still others love the thrill. Many say that they had no intention of taking anything when they entered the store where they were caught.
Opportunistic shoplifting like that committed by teens has increased in recent years, possibly as a result of the sluggish economy and high unemployment among teens. Retailers have responded to the increase by pressing charges against younger teens and waiting less time for parents to arrive before calling police.
Penalties For Shoplifting
What happens to kids who are caught and convicted of shoplifting in Massachusetts? It depends on the value of the items stolen. If the items were valued under $100, the fine will be $250 for the first offense, and $500 for the second offense. A third conviction for shoplifting goods worth less than $100 could put someone in prison for up to two years.
If the items stolen were valued at $100 or more, someone convicted of shoplifting could face up to 28 months in prison and fines of up to $100 for the first offense. The penalties get steeper with subsequent convictions.
My Child Was Stopped At The Store. What Should I Do?.
When you receive that call from store security to come pick up your child, you probably have no idea what to do. Here are some tips that will help you - and your teen - survive the experience:
- Find out what's going to happen. Will your child be charged, banned from the store or required to make restitution?
- Don't yell at your child while you are still in the store. You'll probably say something that you will regret later.
- Once you feel ready to talk with your child about the incident, be very clear about how he or she can regain your trust
- Don't try to shelter your kid if the matter goes to court. That's the job of the defense attorney that you hire on behalf of your child.
One of the most important things you can do is to stay hopeful - your teen's life is not ruined. Less than 1.6 percent of kids who attend court-ordered programs after being caught shoplifting are ever charged again.

Spectacular 4th of July crafts for kids and a cool spray painted or chalk drawn DIY twister game have been released on Kids Activities Blog. Get the kids involved to celebrate Independence Day doing fun stuff with friends and neighbors.
The kids art project is easy to set up for a group of kids. It makes a spectacular 4th of July art for even the youngest participants. Materials needed to make the firework display are black construction paper, a few leftover gift wrap bows, and red, white, and blue chalk. Let the kids begin by drawing their version of spectacular fireworks. Fun swirls, curves, dots, and smooth arcs make great firework displays. Once completed, let them stick bows on the end of their firework lines to turn the fun art into a 3D picture. Display proudly at the 4th of July party.
The cool spray painted or chalk drawn DIY twister game makes a great neighborhood game on hot summer days. Paint it in the driveway with chalk or spray paint it in the front yard. This will be the eighth year that Chad of All Trades has served as a sponsor for this event, and the tournament attracts the best bocce ball players from all over the world. This is the 33rd year in a row that the tournament has been held. The two most common burrowing pests found in Los Angeles are gophers and moles. Gophers are small rodents that live and burrow underground. Gophers are vegetarians primarily eating plants, roots and grass. Their constant digging and eating of the vegetation makes them the gardens worst enemy and a must to remove and control.
Moles are smaller and do not eat the vegetation. Their diet consists of the bugs and insects they find in the tunnel systems they create. Moles are part of the shrew family and are not rodents.
To know whether a San Diego property is being damaged by gophers or moles is mainly determined by the shape of the mounds observed and whether tunneling is seen from above ground. Gophers make kidney shaped mounds with a plugged hole keeping the tunnel sealed. Moles create volcano shaped mounds with a hole in the middle which is also plugged with dirt.
If there is a mole in the garden or grass, a raised ridge in the soil can be seen. This ridge is similar to the Bugs Bunny cartoon when Bugs would burrow in the dirt. Recalling the cartoon to remember when he tunneled in the dirt is raised up and follows the path of where he started and stopped. Moles make a similar ridge caused by their shallow tunneling forcing the dirt up and visible on the surface. Often times the pushed up dirt path goes along hard scape such as a driveway, large rock or sidewalk.
Gophers dig much deeper and their path cannot be detected. Gophers will only leave holes or mounds of dirt as evidence they exist. Both the holes and the mounds are always plugged with dirt. If mounds are observed it may be a gopher or a mole; however the raised ridge is only created by a mole.
Laws regulated by the US EPA have changed the procedures allowed to exterminate gophers, moles and other burrowing pests. The new laws under the Obama administration restrict the use of aluminum phosphide which has been the main control product for decades. According to the Ventura Star in an article title "Pest control gets tougher after EPA rule change" dated May 8th, 2010, the law was passed across the United States, including Ventura, CA, after the product was blamed for the death of two young children in Utah.
