Bicycle safety for adults and children

The state of Washington is interested in promoting safe bicycling and offers many resources for bicyclists. It is especially important for children to learn safe bicycling habits, as they are especially likely to get into bicycle accidents.

Ready for safety

It is important for riders to be properly equipped. A helmet is a necessary accessory for all riders. Lights are required by law at night, a white headlight and a rear taillight or reflector. Riders should dress in bright colors to be more visible to motorists. Using headphones is never a good idea, as they can keep the rider from being fully aware of surroundings.

The Washington Department of Transportation reminds bicyclists to follow all the rules of the road, just like operators of any other vehicle. WDOT offers suggestions for safer bicycling.

Conduct in traffic

Being constantly on the alert is paramount. Bike riders must pay attention to everyone else around them and be ready to act quickly to avoid an accident. A careful rider will be constantly scanning the surroundings, always looking back before changing lanes.

Bicyclists should act predictably so that motorists know what to expect and avoid inadvertently colliding with a bicycle. Predictable behavior includes obeying traffic signals, riding with traffic, staying within lanes and signaling turns. It is best to ride in the middle of a lane when possible and to pass on the left rather than the right side of cars.

Children on bicycles

Of course, children are at risk on bicycles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cautions parents that bicycle crashes are more likely to send a child to the emergency room than any other sport or athletic activity.

More than 20 percent of those who are killed in bicycle accidents are children aged five to 15. Head injuries are the most frequent cause of death. Providing a child with a properly fitted helmet can help reduce the chances of a serious head injury by up to 88 percent.

The most common type of bicycle collision that children get into is called a "midblock rideout," which happens when a bicyclist enters a road from a driveway, alley or curb without looking in all directions for oncoming traffic.

Parents need to remember that young children do not have the same kind of cognitive functioning as adults. Children lack the impulse control that may be needed when they have to pause before riding into a street. They can also easily become distracted, and they have not learned to use peripheral vision to detect hazards. They may not yet know enough to anticipate that an unseen car could be coming around a curve.

Parents can help by showing their children a good example, knowing their children's limitations and enrolling children in bicycle safety courses when available. Children are most likely to be injured by falling, so parents will do well to look over the child's riding route for potholes and other obstacles and practice avoidance techniques with the child.

If a child is hurt in a collision with a car while bicycling, it is important to consult with a personal injury attorney to determine whether they may be able to recover costs, including medical treatment and compensation for the child's pain and suffering.

Jennifer Connelly, Katonah, New York, Discusses At-Home Mom Challenges

Like many other parents, Jennifer Connelly Katonah New York, chose to leave her job in the corporate world and focus on raising her children. In response to a recent article on JCOnline.com, she agrees with the featured mothers that a career raising your children is tough. Making the choice to become a stay-at-home requires a lot of consideration and commitment.

The article focuses on mothers who chose to leave their corporate careers behind and instead, focus full-time on raising their children. For some, the choice was easy. For others, it required more planning. In the end, all of the women decided that it was the right move for their families.

Crystal Zull, mother of two, was following in the footsteps of her own mother, a stay-at-home mom. She pursued her interest in law and earned a degree in criminology and criminal justice, but never considered what would happen once she started a family. Finding it was tough balancing career and family obligations, she admits that she knew in the back of her mind that when she had children, she wanted to stay at home to raise them.

Danielle Clark left her job as a veterinary assistant to not only care for her two children, but to babysit the children from two other families. Unfortunately there is no degree to teach parents how to raise their children, and it comes with no paycheck. But like Clark and Zull, many mothers decide that it is the right move.

Many parents realize that the cost of putting their children in daycare can exceed their paychecks, so it makes more sense to stay home. Also, staying home allows them to raise their children as they see fit, and not miss any of the milestone moments in their lives. It is an art form that requires a lot of patience and practice. There is no right and wrong way to do things in many situations. Zull comments that, "We're learning that we are our own people, not our parents," and that she and her husband are constantly learning and figuring things out.

Stay-at-home mom Jennifer Connelly, Katonah, New York, agrees with the women in the article saying, "If you were to ask many of my women friends whether or not they prefer being in the corporate workforce as opposed to staying home full time with their children, I think most would tell you that 'the grass is always greener on the other side' at times. But we would all agree that just having the opportunity to raise our children is the greatest gift that we could have been given."

Connelly notes that parents need to decide what is in the best interest of their own families. Parenting is a job that changes every day and no two days are the same. There are joys and there are struggles, and you are constantly learning and adapting as you go along. While she enjoyed her time in the corporate world, Jennifer Connelly, Katonah, New York, would not trade the opportunity to spend time raising her children for anything.

ABOUT:

Jennifer Connelly Katonah New York resident, is a stay-at-home mother to her two children ages 10 and 6. She has a degree in Environmental Geography/Global Studies and spent a number of years building a career in direct response advertising sales. Upon giving birth to her first son, Jennifer Connelly, Katonah, New York, decided that raising her children was an even better job opportunity.

Co-parenting presents unique challenges for parents

One of the biggest challenges during divorce is determining child custody. In Georgia, judges typically encourage a custody plan that is in the best interests of the children and grants both parents visitation time.

Judges also grant either sole custody or joint custody. If sole custody is granted, the non-custodial parent retains visitation rights but is not allowed to make significant legal decisions concerning items such as health care, religious upbringing or education. With joint custody, both parents share in the decision-making process regarding these critical decisions.

Be consistent when making decisions, but also stay flexible

Regardless of what type of custody is granted, it is best for both parents to remain actively involved in their children's lives. This is referred to as "co-parenting" and has numerous positive benefits for children.

Although co-parenting styles differ based on family needs, divorce and parenting coaches provide some basic guidelines that can help ensure a smooth transition to co-parenting and help minimize the negative effect of divorce on children.

It is important to allow children the ability to spend as much time with each parent as they desire. Georgia law allows children over the age of 14 to choose which parent they want to live with, and children are likely to respond positively to parents who respect their living preference.

Additionally, remember that parenting was a team effort in the past, and this should not change because of a divorce. Try to respond to problems that arise in the same fashion as before the divorce. Children adjust better if parents continue to respond to situations in a consistent manner.

However, it is also important to stay flexible with decisions and realize that because divorce involves adjusting to a new situation, compromise may sometimes be necessary. Remaining open to creative solutions and expressing a willingness to "give in" to the other parent when necessary sets a great example for children, who often model their parents' behavior as adults.

Both parents should remain included in significant events

Divorce can be emotionally traumatizing for even the most mature and stable adults, so it is also extremely important for co-parents to keep arguing to a minimum around children.

It is expected that this may initially be difficult. Nonetheless, children will gain long-term benefits from witnessing their parents handle negative emotions in a mature and responsible manner.

One of the best ways to show this maturity is including the other parent in important events in children's lives, such as birthdays, graduations or sporting events. Although decisions like this may seem to have only a minor effect on children, they produce significant long-term benefits.

Finally, one of the biggest mistakes co-parents can make is forcing children to relay messages back and forth. Children commonly misinterpret messages, both intentionally and unintentionally. This disrupts the overall communication process for everyone and is likely to lead to unnecessary conflicts.

Divorcing couples struggling with co-parenting issues should consult an experienced family law attorney. The attorney can help negotiate a fair custody arrangement and visitation schedule and help ensure a smooth co-parenting process.

As more and more Malian refugees arrive in Mauritania, UNICEF steps up relief efforts

As more and more Malians arrive at Mb?ra refugee camp in Mauritania, UNICEF and partners are scaling up life-saving services for refugee and host community, alike.

Visit Humanitarian Action for Children 2013: Mauritania

MBERA REFUGEE CAMP, Mauritania, 19 March 2013 ? Nightfall in Mb?ra refugee camp brings some relief for the refugees and humanitarian workers after a hard day in this hot, dry, remote region.

Mb?ra is a busy place, home to more than 75,000 refugees who continue to arrive in Mauritania, having fled conflict in Mali. It is the largest refugee camp that has been established to respond to the crisis, compared to those in Burkina Faso and the Niger, and it continues to grow.

Rescue and relief efforts are urgently being scaled up to meet the basic needs of the refugees.

Mohamed treated for malnutrition

Mohammed and his four children are among the refugees to arrive since the beginning of 2013. Leaving their home near Timbuktu was a difficult decision ? they faced an uncertain future. They fled and took only what they could carry.

When the family reached the Fassala refugee transit centre, just over the border into Mauritania, the children?s health was assessed. Three-year-old Mohamed was diagnosed with malnutrition and given treatment, including fortified milk.

Within four days, the family was settled in the Mb?ra camp, which was re-established by UNHCR and the Government of Mauritania in 2012. There, they receive assistance from a range of organizations, including UNICEF.

Water, sanitation and hygiene package provided

UNICEF is working alongside UNHCR and partners to reinforce interventions in Mb?ra camp and to respond to the needs of new refugees. Life-saving humanitarian services are provided to children and women, including a comprehensive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) package.

Access to safe drinking water, latrines and hygiene materials such as soap is of critical importance in preventing disease. In response to the needs of Malian refugees and the nutritional crisis of 2012, as of November, UNICEF had provided 5,598 WASH kits and awareness messages to severe acute malnutrition-affected carers/mother and child.

The effects of the WASH package are immediate. According to WASH specialist Etienne Yongwe, of United Nations Standby partner CANADEM, ?WASH interventions are having a positive impact on the lives of refugees and helping the new arrivals to rapidly meet their essential needs. The needs of women and children are also addressed through a ?WASH in Nutrition? integrated service in nutrition centres. By working on the two sectors simultaneously, we improve and reinforce the health outcomes for children.??

Refugees and host communities benefit

UNICEF is also expanding its interventions for host communities in the area surrounding the camp. A WASH package has been extended to assist children and women in the area who have also been affected by the nutritional crisis across the Sahel.

?We are providing life-saving and resilience services to the newly arrived refugees, and we are striving to support local population with a comprehensive vision to meet UNICEF?s Core Commitments for Children,? stresses UNICEF Representative in Mauritania Lucia Elmi. ?Currently, our results and achievements cannot keep pace with the dire and growing needs of children in Mauritania. More resources and more support are required from all our donors and partners.?

The WASH and WASH in Nutrition interventions complement health, nutrition, child protection and education actions. Together, they bring a broad package of relief and resilience services to refugees and host communities.

Mohammed and his family are now getting used to life in Mb?ra camp, and little Mohamed is beginning to recover. Like many other children in the camp, he faces an uncertain future, but here, he is at least safe and has access to basic services. The whole family is now benefitting from integrated interventions, and they can begin to look to the future with hope.

Two Million Syrian Children Caught in Crossfire of Conflict Entering Its Third Year, Save the Children Warns

Two million children trapped inside Syria are innocent victims of a bloody conflict that has already claimed 70,000 lives, Save the Children warns in a new report, Childhood Under Fire, launched today to mark two years of violence in Syria.
"For millions of Syrian children, the innocence of childhood has been replaced by the cruel realities of trying to survive war," said Save the Children President and CEO, Patricia Erb. "While visiting refugee families in Lebanon, I saw firsthand their urgent needs for support."
In Childhood Under Fire, Save the Children details the impact of the conflict on children, showing that many are struggling to find enough to eat; are living in barns, parks and caves; are unable to go to school with teachers having fled and schools being attacked; are being forced into early marriage; and that damage to sanitation systems is forcing some children to defecate in the street.
"Through our work across Syria, and in neighbouring countries, we know that Syrian children, who should be learning at school and playing secure in their homes, are instead consumed with grief and trauma and focused on finding the necessities of life - shelter, food and water," said Ms. Erb.
Citing new research carried out amongst refugee children by Bahcesehir University in Turkey, the report also reveals the extent to which children have been directly targeted in the war, with one in three children reporting having been hit, kicked or shot at.
Combined with the breakdown of society in parts of the country and more than three million people displaced, the conflict has led to the collapse of childhood for millions of youngsters, the charity says.
Childhood Under Fire details how some young boys are being used by armed groups as porters, runners and human shields, bringing them close to the frontline, while some girls are being married off early to 'protect' them from a widely-perceived threat of sexual violence.
The report's key findings are:
  • Thousands of children are facing malnutrition as food production is wiped out and severe shortages take hold. "Why did we leave? Hunger. Food. There was none. No bread. If I stayed my children would have died from hunger." - Rami, father of three.

  • Millions of children have been forced from their homes and tens of thousands are living in parks, barns and caves. "There were 13 of us in total, crammed into one room. We did not leave that room for two weeks."- Yasmine, 12.

  • Girls are being married off early in an effort to protect them from perceived threat of sexual violence. "My daughter is 16 and she loved school. She is innocent and very pretty. I know that men are hurting women. We could not protect her, so we had to marry her. We needed her to have a protector." - Um Ali, mother of 2.

  • Families have been left without heating in winter as fuel prices have risen by up to 500 per cent. "In one area of Syria where Save the Children is responding, during the bitter winter, school benches were stolen for firewood; desperate, understandable measures to stay warm, but further erosion of children's opportunities to learn and play."- Childhood Under Fire.
The research by the Bahcesehir University also reveals the extent to which children have been affected by war, with nearly one third of children surveyed saying that they had been separated from members of their families due to the conflict. Three quarters of those surveyed had experienced the death of a close friend or family member. Many are showing signs of emotional difficulties as they struggle to come to terms with their experiences.
Save the Children, which is providing humanitarian relief in Syria and neighbouring countries, is calling for all parties to the conflict to allow unfettered, safe access to populations in need and to ensure that everything is done to bring the fighting to an end.
It welcomes pledges to fund the $1.5 billion humanitarian appeal for Syria, and calls on governments to urgently deliver the money, which is designed to target aid both inside the stricken country and to refugees living on Syria's borders.
The aid agency is appealing for funds to help its response in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan where it is delivering food, warm clothes, blankets, providing education and helping children recover from their experiences.
Interviews with Patricia Erb, and regional spokespeople, are available. Please call: 1-800-668-5036 x222 or off hours at (647) 273-7134.

Two-thirds of victims of left-over munitions in Mali are children

BAMAKO/GENEVA UNICEF is warning of a rising threat to communities in Central and Northern Mali from ammunition and explosive devices. Since April 2012, 60 victims of explosive remnants of war have been reported(1), with children making up two thirds of the total. The level of risk is likely to further increase when displaced families start returning home to areas that have seen the worst of the conflict.

Last December, UNICEF estimated that at least 100,000 children and parents were exposed to the dangers of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Northern Mali. This estimate was made before the military intervention, which has involved air strikes and ground operations since January. Approximately 200,000 children from conflict-affected areas in Central and Northern Mali are at risk of injury or death due to explosive remnants of war (ERW), according to UNICEF.

Children were playing with a device in my courtyard. I thought there was no risk. I threw it on a stone and it exploded, said 19 year-old Amadou, a UXO survivor from Mopti who lost the finger on his left hand. When I woke up, there was blood everywhere. My two brothers, 4 and 16, were injured. My niece died. She was only 18 months-old. I feel sad and guilty.

The danger is now at every corner in communities from Central and Northern Mali where heavy fighting took place, said Franoise Ackermans, UNICEF Representative in Mali. Explosions can happen anywhere and anytime -- when children are on their way to school or when a woman goes to the market. Our teams on the ground report charred remains of war vehicles and a lot of abandoned ammunition.

A mother will not bring her children to the health centre if she believes the surroundings are contaminated with UXOs. A teacher will not go back to school if the courtyard is full of abandoned ammunition, Ms. Ackermans added.

In order to better protect civilians from the explosive threat, UNICEF-supported partners have held public events over the past five months in schools, markets and workplaces that have raised the awareness of an estimated 27,000 people.

We are not always with adults, said 13 year-old Adidiatou after attending a session. If children dont know, they may pick up a grenade or another explosive thing as if it was a toy. They may not realize it can hurt. If children dont participate to these information activities, its a pity.

National and Community based radio stations have also been used to disseminate life-saving messages in five languages, while the agency has also produced posters and other material using Malian artists.

Preliminary field reports for the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) suggest that large quantities of explosive remnants of war (ERW) -- including unexploded and abandoned ammunition such as artillery shells, mortars, rockets, grenades, bullets and aircraft bombs -- have been left behind in the aftermath of air attacks and ground operations. The highest concentration of ERWs is likely to be found in areas where heavy fighting took place such as in Diabaly, Douentza, Konna and Gao.

It is clear that Mali is impacted by the presence of landmines and explosive ordnance, said Gareth Edwin Francis, UNMAS Operations Officer. The United Nations has a duty to address this through the swift deployment of survey and Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams in order to ensure safe access for all actors and, importantly, to respond to the needs of the Malian population. As one of several steps to this end, UNMAS is currently planning the imminent deployment of a team to Konna in Central Mali. More will follow.

In 2013, UNICEF and its partners are planning to step up mine-risk education activities and radio sensitization campaigns, especially in Northern regions in order to raise the awareness of about 400,000 people in conflict affected areas.

'Voice In A Million' Set To Perform At Wembley In An Extra Special Celebration Of Mums

The 'Arena Spectacle' will see around 5,000 members of the UK children's choir take to the stage at one of the worlds best known music venues, to perform a wide ranging repertoire of engaging numbers including the Gary Barlows Jubilee Hit Sing, the Olympic theme 'One Night Like This' and the heart-string-tugging 'I want a Mum' which is an original Cyndi Lauper piece rearranged specifically for the choir in celebration and recognition of the hard work, love and dedication of Mums everywhere.

The 'Voice in a Million' choir has gained national esteem and found a place in the hearts of many since the musical project was founded in 2009. The concept behind the choir was one of passion and tenderness for the plight of children across the world who are unfortunate to have to live without the care of their parents. 'Voice in a Million' was created to be a platform upon which to raise awareness of those children separated, abandoned or orphaned and in desperate need of a loving family life.

Having started in 2009 with around only 30 members, the children's choir has exploded in reputation and following, with over 20,000 members performing as part of the 'Voice in a Million' choir nationally. The choir has enjoyed success at sold out arenas, through the release of an album and have also appeared with a range of global music superstars.

'Voice in a Million' are looking to maximise public awareness this Mothers Day for the millions of children in need of a family. Mass Exodus as Syrian Children Run for Their Lives

In the last 24 hours an estimated 10,000 children and their families have fled Syria into Jordan.
As fighting intensified in Southern Syria almost 20,000 refugees arrived at the border. Nearly 3500 people made it to Zaatari refugee camp last night.
Up to four to five buses are arriving in the camp every hour - the majority crammed full of frightened and exhausted people who fled with what little they could carry.
Saba Al Mobaslat, Save the Children's Program Director in Zaatari camp, said:
"Many women and children are running for their lives, arriving with just the clothes on their backs. Many are unable to pack essential supplies and desperately need our help.
"It's freezing, wet and the camp is already over-crowded. Many children who are arriving are exhausted, shocked and terrified.
"Despite the best efforts of aid workers, the camp is reaching a breaking point and this is going to get so much worse in the next few days if numbers continue to rise at such an alarming rate."
Temperatures have already hit minus four degrees in the camp. Heavy rains are expected next week prompting concerns for the over 50,000 people already living in the Zaatari camp.
Save the Children, in partnership with UN agencies and Jordanian authorities, is working around the clock to help the refugees providing food, blankets and winter clothes. It is also providing emotional support for children who have suffered or witnessed brutal attacks within Syria.
Save the Children is bringing vital life-saving help to children in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. Across the region we have already reached nearly 130,000 people.
